Of Flesh and Stone
by Tom Baskeyfield and Mario Popham

The hills of North Wales have been transformed by the large-scale extraction of slate; its mass manipulation spawning towns and communities, its dissemination satisfying a global demand.

The landscape bears the scars of this conquest, and nurtures stories of its making. A past dependence on the rock continues to shape the human narratives unfolding within these hills and valleys.

Meanwhile, on distant rooftops of towns and cities forged by the very same forces of industry, the dwindling vestiges of these mountainsides endure amongst the glass, concrete and steel.

The second instalment of the Shaped by Stone project, Of Flesh and Stone, weaves a narrative (through large-format digital photography and embossed rubbings) out of the legacy of the slate industry in North Wales, in particular its relationship to the birth-place of the Industrial Revolution: Manchester.

Divided into two halves (separated by informative and inspiring essays written by art writer Sara Jaspan and geologist Ruth Siddall) the book follows a similar format to 'Shaped by Stone', recreating the dynamic interplay of Popham's photographs and Baskeyfield's graphite rubbings, echoing the rhythm as presented in exhibition. In addition however, the book includes images not seen before.
