Shaped by Stone: Strata to Streets
by Tom Baskeyfield and Mario Popham

Over Millennia we have shaped stone: chipped, cut, split, crushed – turned hillsides into quarries – strata into streets. As in many towns, this process is the foundation of Macclesfield. The pink and blueish gritstone of Tegg’s Nose has been quarried for hundreds of years. The hill exists as fragments around the town: scattered. It sits in the walls, the facing of buildings and the lining of streets.

Through a dialogue between analogue processes – namely, large format photography, drawing (embossed rubbing), darkroom experimentation, writing walking and talking – artist Tom Baskeyfield and photographer Mario Popham aim to bring to the fore these layers of our shared history.

Shaped by Stone was originally commissioned by the Barnaby Festival in Macclesfield, it was then supported by HOME Mcr and developed further into the project: Of Flesh and Stone. The project has been exhibited at GroundWork Gallery, King's Lynn, SIA Gallery, Sheffield, and presented at a number of academic conferences. This book is a re-envisioning of the physical installations of the works.
